Meeting Dooby in Robot Land

This morning something very special happened…Miss Nicolaou and the grade one’s received a letter all the way from Dooby the Robot. Dooby invited us to Robot Land to help him out with his dance video. Dooby wore black sunglasses and communicated to us through his robot actions.
Our mission was to work as a team and create our very own robot medallions to wear in the dance video. This was very exciting! We used black paper and shiny foil…

Where’s The Maths?

In Grade 1, we are constantly looking for the mathematacis in the world around us. It has been an ongoing exploration and students are quick to point out new ways they use maths throughout their day which wethen add to our MATHS AROUND US display.

Today Elijah shared with the class the video clips he recorded of maths around him during the weekend.

Elijah found maths in:

  • Clocks (time)
  • Angry Birds (numbers, direction, angles, points that are added up as your score gets bigger)

Elijah even started a discussion of the mathematics involved in driving a car. Ms Hornby found 10 ways we use maths when we’re driving a car! Can you think of some?

KEEP AN EYE ON THIS POST: MOVIE CLIPS TO COME!

Rock Gardens

Last week Nyamal, Miniya, Tevi, Joyice and Fiona D were collecting rocks they found around the school.

Miss Cervenjak told us that when she was a little girl she made a little rock garden, using an old tile and covered it with dirt and rocks.

That got us thinking, why don’t we make our own rock garden and keep it in the garden for kids to play with during snack and lunch.

So on Friday, Nyamal ran a Student Choice Workshop in which Zakeem, Shigufa, Alex, Bree and Nyamal all helped to get the rock gardens going.

At first, Zakeem wasn’t to sure about the idea of “getting dirty” but within no time he had rolled up his sleves and his garden was coming to life.

Alex even added a worm to his garden. “My worm lives in his house”.

“Yesterday” by The Beatles

We have been learning “Yesterday” by The Beatles. We have been finding the rhyming words in the song! Can you find them?

Yesterday
All my troubles seem so far away
Now it looks as though they are here to stay
Oh I believe in
Yesterday

Suddenly
I’m not half the man I used to be
Now I shadow hanging over me
Oh Yesterday
Came suddenly

Why she had to go
I don’t know
She wouldn’t say
I said
Something wrong
Now I long for yesterday

Yesterday
Love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
oh I believe in
yesterday

Why she had to go
I don’t know
She wouldn’t say
Something wrong
Now I long for
Yesterday

Yesterday
Love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
oh I believe in
Yesterday

Drawing a turtle

This was a turtle I drew for Mr Broadway. I did it by using lines like in the book. The book also helped with drawing the head and it helped me with drawing the flippers.

I also made another turtle with scrap paper then I coloured it in.

Little Dancers

Well done to our expert dancers last night at our open night. Sarsha was very brave in teaching parents, teachers and other students the dance moves independently. Milan and Nyamal supported Sarsha by showing everyone the moves and helping them. They all displayed fantastic confidence and coordination! We hope everyone had great fun doing the dancing. Our grade 1 dance instructors would love to continue to teach the dance if anyone is interested! 🙂

Here’s a challenge for you… what mathematical thinking is involved in dancing?
