Thinking about our choices

It’s really important to think about things before we either say them or do them. To demonstrate, we got a piece of paper and discussed situations that leave another person hurt or angry- and we scrunched up our paper. When we tried to smooth it out, we couldn’t – there was still the marks of where the paper had been scrunched. We thought about ways that we could help each other in our community to help other peoples “paper” to get smoothed out…

If people doesn’t know how to write something I can help them – Nyamal
If someone hurts I’ll take care of them – Broadie
I’ll listen – Rhema
Walk inside to be safe – Connor
I can tap people to help them to listen – Ian
Sharing – Brian

Learning Agreement

Today we had a very engaged learning agreement! We reflected at the end of learning agreement on what we saw, what we heard and how we felt.

Have you filled your jar today?

Today we talked about the question “have you filled your jar today?”

We all come to school with an imaginary jar. Every time someone does a good deed to help us or show us kindness, a magical bean is placed in our jar. When we help another or show some one else kindness, a magical bean is placed in their jar. But if we hurt someone else or waste others learning time, we remove a magical bean from their jar.

We have a grade 1 community jar- when we see a strong, helpful or kind choice being made by a grade 1 a magical bean goes in the jar. I wonder how many we will have at the end of the day?

Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes!

Alison shared her interest of hip hop dancing with us in the grade 1 unit. For Student Choice Workshops, we have been encouraging the grade 1’s to share their interests and passions to explore. As part of the Student Choice Workshop, Alison facilitated a small group to learn a hip hop dancing routine. They worked together to source a routine that they wanted to learn and to independently assist each other with learning the moves. The group performed the routine in front of the green screen and filmed their dancing. They were very puzzled to understand how the green screen actually works! AJ now explains “it’s like a magic trick!”. The children participated through the whole process from learning the dance to editing the movie on the computer. They are all very proud of their creation and it will inspire many more mini projects to come!

Exploring Narrative

Today the Hot Potatoes discussed what a “setting” is. We thought of our favourite books and thought about what the setting was in the story.

What is your favourite story setting?

We began to create our own settings through collage. AJ made the discovery that the white piece of paper was just like a green screen – we could put what ever we liked as the setting backdrop!20120430-105922.jpg

“Exploring Reporters” #3

Today we explored the questions that were in the news report that we were reading. We asked ourselves “what is a question?”.

“We don’t know what the answer is” Milan.
“We want to know something” Alison.

Let’s practice writing a question mark!

“It looks like an upside down i!” Miniya.
“It looks like a G!” Ali.

What do we have here?

“It’s an exclamation mark!” Nathan.
“It isn’t a question because it’s not like this [draws a question mark]” Aaliyah.

What does an exclamation mark mean?
“When you get excited!” Tori

We discovered that the questions all began with “what”, “where” and “how”!

Milan asked a question for Mr. Trotter:
“Why are playgrounds too small?”
Miniya asked:
“Would you play with me?”
Tarik asked Victor:
“What do you like to play?”

Where do you use questions during the day?
When do you use exclamation marks?
Can you think of some examples for both?

Today we read a news report an had a great discussion about how it is different to a story. We looked at different news names and logos and decided we need our own news!

Today we introduced our statement and project wall to the grade 1’s…

“Movement is Everywhere”

They began thinking about the statement during Learning Agreement and even began adding wonderings and wishes to the wall.
