After reading “Mrs Armitage on Wheels” the grade 1’s designed their own bikes, thinking of the repetitive statement from the story “what this bike needs is…”.

The Grade 1’s were looking at the poem “A Child’s Plea…” (the author of the poem is unknown) during shared reading workshops. This poem has been in their reading logs since prep. We read the poem and discussed what learning is and what our learning looks like. They came up with so many “Wonderings” and “Discoveries” from reading the poem!
The biggest discovery was that they began to look at what they do during the day and began to identify what their learning.

“Today I went to the construction space for Learning Agreement. I was making a robot. I had to draw a plan first. The labels on my plan says feet, person, hand, body. I think my robot looks the same as my plan. Planning is a good thing so you know what to put on and so I can make it again.” Brian
Maybe a challenge would be for someone else to look at the plan and make the robot?

Today the grade 1 and 2 enjoyed sharing Learning Agreement in the grade 2 unit. At the construction space, a team was working out how to make a plan and create a vehicle that can move…
Kristen: Plan- what does plan mean?
Pawan: plan what you’re going to make.
Brodie: you need to draw what you’re trying to build.
Kristen: Why do we need to plan?
Dominic: so we know what the building will look like.
Sadul: because we won’t know what to build!
Pawan: when you’re making something, if you don’t plan you won’t know what to make.
Ehab: my plan is in my mind.
Kristen: What should our plan have?
Broadie: should have tyres.
We discussed plans and the features of a plan including labels and different perspectives of the design (ie. birds eye view). They were all very engaged in their learning.
Broadie: Birds eye view means you’re looking at the top of it like a bird. Bottom view you’re looking at it like a mouse!

On Wednesday 3rd May 2012, the grade 1’s had their assembly to share their learning with Wooranna Park Primary School. They used Skype to portray real time news broadcasting. In workshops, students have been looking at different forms of sharing news – news reporters, newspapers and the blog. It is an opportunity to develop their public speaking and presenting skills.

It’s really important to think about things before we either say them or do them. To demonstrate, we got a piece of paper and discussed situations that leave another person hurt or angry- and we scrunched up our paper. When we tried to smooth it out, we couldn’t – there was still the marks of where the paper had been scrunched. We thought about ways that we could help each other in our community to help other peoples “paper” to get smoothed out…

Today we talked about the question “have you filled your jar today?”
We all come to school with an imaginary jar. Every time someone does a good deed to help us or show us kindness, a magical bean is placed in our jar. When we help another or show some one else kindness, a magical bean is placed in their jar. But if we hurt someone else or waste others learning time, we remove a magical bean from their jar.
We have a grade 1 community jar- when we see a strong, helpful or kind choice being made by a grade 1 a magical bean goes in the jar. I wonder how many we will have at the end of the day?
