On Wednesday 3rd May 2012, the grade 1’s had their assembly to share their learning with Wooranna Park Primary School. They used Skype to portray real time news broadcasting. In workshops, students have been looking at different forms of sharing news – news reporters, newspapers and the blog. It is an opportunity to develop their public speaking and presenting skills.

It’s really important to think about things before we either say them or do them. To demonstrate, we got a piece of paper and discussed situations that leave another person hurt or angry- and we scrunched up our paper. When we tried to smooth it out, we couldn’t – there was still the marks of where the paper had been scrunched. We thought about ways that we could help each other in our community to help other peoples “paper” to get smoothed out…
If people doesn’t know how to write something I can help them – Nyamal
If someone hurts I’ll take care of them – Broadie
I’ll listen – Rhema
Walk inside to be safe – Connor
I can tap people to help them to listen – Ian
Sharing – Brian
Today at the Communication space, Tahra, Angel and Fiona T were looking at the word “the” on our word wall. “I know that word!” Tahra said. Tahra and Fiona identified the word. They began looking through the word cards and found other words that have “th” – this, there, with, they, them.
They wondered how many other words they could find? They searched for words that they could find with the letters and sound of “th” in their books. They found lots of other words and they are on the look out for more!
Angel, Tahra and Fiona should feel very proud of their learning and their engagement in their task.
Today we talked about the question “have you filled your jar today?”
We all come to school with an imaginary jar. Every time someone does a good deed to help us or show us kindness, a magical bean is placed in our jar. When we help another or show some one else kindness, a magical bean is placed in their jar. But if we hurt someone else or waste others learning time, we remove a magical bean from their jar.
We have a grade 1 community jar- when we see a strong, helpful or kind choice being made by a grade 1 a magical bean goes in the jar. I wonder how many we will have at the end of the day?

Before we could publish our online newspaper, each committee was required to brainstorm ideas and present them to the Crunchy Carrot Team.
Our Committees were:

Noni the Pony, Dave the Dog and Coco that Cat were all asleep in the hay. In our previous workshop, we worked out how many legs were curled up in the bed. Today we made up our own wonderful addition stories! We had wonderful imaginations with the animals we thought of – some are quite tricky!
Can you work out the solution to our addition stories? How did you work it out?
A giraffe, a pig, a zebra and five Garfields [cats] are sleeping in the bed. How many legs are in the bed?
In the farm there was animals sleeping in the hay. There was a centipede and there was a lion and there was a tiger. How many legs are in the hay?
Photos of learning by Tevi, Brian and Sadul. Stay tuned for more problems to come on this post!!
