On Wednesday 3rd May 2012, the grade 1’s had their assembly to share their learning with Wooranna Park Primary School. They used Skype to portray real time news broadcasting. In workshops, students have been looking at different forms of sharing news – news reporters, newspapers and the blog. It is an opportunity to develop their public speaking and presenting skills.
It’s really important to think about things before we either say them or do them. To demonstrate, we got a piece of paper and discussed situations that leave another person hurt or angry- and we scrunched up our paper. When we tried to smooth it out, we couldn’t – there was still the marks of where the paper had been scrunched. We thought about ways that we could help each other in our community to help other peoples “paper” to get smoothed out…

Saying sorry is an important way to show we have made a mistake and that we realise it – but our actions leave a mark.
Today the Grade 1’s explored more spelling patterns in the Communication Space. Miniya, Ali and Nyamal were look it the word “she” and noticed that the “sh” together made a special sound. Looking through their books, they were able to identify other words with “sh” in them.
Tori and Ian were challenged by looking at contractions. We worked together to identify contractions and what a contraction is. Tori found the word “that’s” – “I know! “That” and “is”!” said Ian.
They worked together to identify more contractions in the books. Tori was able to identify that “wasn’t” was created by the words “was” and “not”.
I wonder if you can think of other words with “sh” or that are contractions?
Today we talked about the question “have you filled your jar today?”
We all come to school with an imaginary jar. Every time someone does a good deed to help us or show us kindness, a magical bean is placed in our jar. When we help another or show some one else kindness, a magical bean is placed in their jar. But if we hurt someone else or waste others learning time, we remove a magical bean from their jar.
We have a grade 1 community jar- when we see a strong, helpful or kind choice being made by a grade 1 a magical bean goes in the jar. I wonder how many we will have at the end of the day?
Today we worked with Mrs. Hetherington to solve a problem! We have our Skype working and a school contacted us from Canada on Twitter. We want to talk to the Grade 1’s from Canada on Skype. To do that, we had to work out the time difference between Australia and Canada. We explored 24hour time and the way the earth moves. We created this timeline to help us. We think we have worked it out?
Hopefully we can now work out a time to Skype the school in Canada!
Noni the Pony, Dave the Dog and Coco that Cat were all asleep in the hay. In our previous workshop, we worked out how many legs were curled up in the bed. Today we made up our own wonderful addition stories! We had wonderful imaginations with the animals we thought of – some are quite tricky!

A giraffe, a pig, a zebra and five Garfields [cats] are sleeping in the bed. How many legs are in the bed?
In the farm there was animals sleeping in the hay. There was a centipede and there was a lion and there was a tiger. How many legs are in the hay?
