Spaghetti Letters

Today Gow, Joey, Abass, Joyice and Shigufe had lots of fun with Ms Hornby and Mr Broadway.

We sat in a circle and were blindfolded so we couldnt see and then we had to find the letters in the coloured spaghetti (that looked like worms).

We had to find A, P, C, R, H, S and M, and then make a word with that letter.

The spaghetti was cold and soft and felt like noodles. Gow thought it smelt like rice.

After that, Ms Hornby started throwing the worms and it made a big, big mess.

Everyone was so happy and Ms Hornby was so silly.

Does the weight effect how far our models go?

Continued from our “Mrs Armitage on Wheels” workshops…..

Today we discussed the question “What would make a difference to how far our model travelled?”. We came up with lots of ideas – one being whether the weight would make a difference.

We weighed our models on scales. We used tiles to measure how heavy they were. Guess what? The model that went the furthest was also the heaviest!

Stop Work Day

Today was a bit of a different day, as the Grade 1’s, 2’s and Roohi from Prep, joined forces and had a fun day. Here’s what we’ve got to say…

END OF DAY REFLECTIONS

Logan: “My favourite thing was getting to use the i-Pads and the outside games.”

Luda (Alex’s Mum): “My favourite thing about today was coming to pick up Alex early when I finished work but he was having too much fun to come home!”

Daniel: “I played Chess on the i-Pad with Aaliyah. I taught her some new moves but I didn’t always win.”

Roohi: “I made new friends. Miniya and lots.”

Abass: “I fixed the blocks up. Circles, squares, triangles and another one. I don’t know what it called. I think it looks funny like a rectangle but it’s not. It has 4 corners and 4 sides. Do you know what shape it can be?”

Alex and Aaliyah: “It was fun drawing the Grade 2’s faces. I had to look really close to make it look the same.”

Tevi, Miniya and Connor made a lucky dip with all the kids that were here today, so we could take turns to use the i-Pads. They then decided to try put the names in alphabetical order.

Miniya: “It’s a bit hard. You have to know the alphabet really good.”

Tevi: “I know the alphabet, we had to look at the second letter too. Because Aa in Aaliyah is before Al in Alex.”

The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle

This week, Hot Potatoes enjoyed The Grouchy Ladybug By Eric Carle.

“First we read The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle. Miss Cervenjak read it and we listened to it online too”. Miniya

“We made our own book, just like Eric Carle”. Ali

“We used clocks to help us look at the time.” AJ

“We painted our pictures [illustrations].” Risinu

“If I was a little Ladybug is our new song. I like to sing it because I like ladybugs now.” Nathan

We went on our ladybug hunt. It was fun looking for aphids that the ladybugs eat. We didn’t find any ‘real’ ladybugs today but we did find some other ones!” Joyice & Nyachuot.

A Child’s Plea…

The Grade 1’s were looking at the poem “A Child’s Plea…” (the author of the poem is unknown) during shared reading workshops. This poem has been in their reading logs since prep. We read the poem and discussed what learning is and what our learning looks like. They came up with so many “Wonderings” and “Discoveries” from reading the poem!

The biggest discovery was that they began to look at what they do during the day and began to identify what their learning.

“We share with each other! We are a community” – Brian
“It’s like the measuring that we are doing in the mathematics space” – Connor
“We played that memory game that is like a memory tray” – Jasmine
“Way and weigh are the same word but means different” – Tevi

Mother’s Day

Although it is Mother’s Day, we talked about how it is a great opportunity to appreciate any special females in our lives. We are hoping that all the special Mums, Grandmas, Aunts, sisters or special ladies in your lives had a wonderful day today!

Did you enjoy your “hand flowers”?

Grade 1 Assembly

On Wednesday 3rd May 2012, the grade 1’s had their assembly to share their learning with Wooranna Park Primary School. They used Skype to portray real time news broadcasting. In workshops, students have been looking at different forms of sharing news – news reporters, newspapers and the blog. It is an opportunity to develop their public speaking and presenting skills.

It was a fantastic assembly, all grade 1 students should feel very proud of their learning from term 1 and 2!
