Today we introduced our statement and project wall to the grade 1’s…

They began thinking about the statement during Learning Agreement and even began adding wonderings and wishes to the wall.

“Noni the Pony” #3

Today we read “Noni the Pony” and listed our wonderings and discoveries. We made so many new discoveries and lots of wonderings! Maybe you might be able to answer some of our questions?

WONDERINGS
Why is her tail the colour of honey? Tevi

DISCOVERIES
Sentences end in full stops. Ian
Farms don’t always have animals or fences. Miss Hornby

They rhyme because they have “at” – the first letters don’t have to be the same. Yanni

“Noni the Pony”

We talked about horses today and brainstormed what we knew about them.

“They eat hay” Broadie.
“You ride them” Victor.
“Some stand on their hind legs” Connor.
“They eat carrots” Edward.

We then made our own horses out of play dough.

The Chocolate Egg Hunt!

We received an exciting letter this morning! Estelle rushed to the Grade 1’s and said “I found this letter under the door!”. The letter said “Please go to the park over the road at 9.50am”. The grade 1’s walked over to the park and found ANOTHER letter! It said “search high and low but stay on the wood chips! Love the Easter bunny xx”. The children searched then we shared the eggs so that everyone had an equal amount. What fun!

How do you celebrate Easter? Is there something else that you celebrate at this time of year?

Our Grade 1 Community Agreement

In a workshop group, the Grade 1’s discussed how they want to feel at school and how we look after our learning environment. The students contributed ideas to develop their own “Grade 1 Community Agreement”. Here is what they agreed on:

To be a member of our Grade 1 Community, I will:

Respect our Space:

  • Pick up rubbish and put it in the bin.
  • Pick up materials (pencils, paper, resources) and put them away where they belong.
  •  Leave resources and materials in Learning Agreement spaces and on shelves.
  • We are responsible and respectful of our belongings.

Respect Everyone in our Community:

  • We keep our bodies to ourselves.
  • We listen with our ears, our eyes, our hearts and our body language.
  • We want to be safe.
  • We think about our choices and how our actions make others feel.

 

We are all here to Learn:

  • We will try our hardest.
  • We will engage in our learning.
  • We will support others in their learning and we have the right to be support in our learning.
We are exploring ways to communicate what these LOOK, SOUND, SMELL and FEEL like to each other, our families and our wider community. We are exploring these through creating social stories, drama, drawing and movies. Stay tuned for our creations!

What Is Energy?

Today the Grade 1’s were posed a question – What is Energy?

Rachel and I were wanting to find out their current understanding of energy in order to strengthen our planning for our unit of inquiry. Here are some thoughts:

“Energy is when you run fast and to drink water and to eat. Energy is sports.” Alison

“I was running and I’m going to eat a carrot to run very fast. Energy is when you can eat very fast then you can think very fast.” Milan

“Energy is made out of apple. It makes you fast and good. When you eat, it becomes part of your body.” Jasmine

“Drinking water is your sweat and energy. Then you can jump, walk, exercise and run. You drink water then you run, sweat comes out. Energy is sweat.” Tevi

“Energy means to me traffic lights.” Risinu

“Energy means turning on the lights in my house and school.” Yomal

“Being brave. When you get hurt you can use your energy.” Fiona D

“This is a house with kids. The kids have gone for a run. They drink water – but it’s in the house.” Estelle

“Water makes energy.” Nyamal

“There’s water to give us energy. Air is energy. And we have to go to work to get energy.” Rhema

“Breakfast is healthy for you and it gives you energy.” Miniya

“If you’re doing a race you must get water first to be first.” Fiona T

“Energy is all about being healthy.” Joyice

“Vegetables are energy, drinks make you run fast. Peanut butter sandwiches with honey gives you energy, because the honey goes into peanut butter and makes it healthy.” Ian

“Water is energy because it makes you healthy. If you drink lots and lots or water you can carry lots of things, like an airplane.” Sarsha

“Energy is petrol in cars.” Brian

“Rainbows have about a thousand hundred energies.” Connor

“When electricity goes to the washing machine.” Hussnain

“A tweety bird is energy – he drinks water.” Niki

“Running when they are having a race. They are not taking jets, a car or airplane, bike, motorbike, skateboards or skooter. None of these are energy.” Edward

“Magic Beach” by Alison Lester

We have been reading “Magic Beach” by Alison Lester. We had lots of questions! We found Alison Lester’s email address so we decided that we could email Alison Lester our questions. Hopefully we get a response soon!

Hello Alison,

We are Grade 1’s from Wooranna Park Primary School in Dandenong, Victoria.
We have read “Magic Beach” and we really liked it. Can we please ask you some questions about “Magic Beach”?
How did you make the pictures? Why did the Princess save the Prince? Were they dreaming or was it real? How long did it take for you to write the book? How was the book made? When did you add the pictures? Did you put it into a machine? Where is the beach?
