Birds at our school

In the fine art space Hussnain, Muhammad, Brian, Tarik, Ahsan and Abass spent a LA session looking at some birds that visit the school and then making a collage of colored paper to look like their feathers. We looked at the iPad and a bird book to see that we got the colors right so that others could learn and recognize these birds.

Ahsan worked on the Noisy Miner, Abass and Hussnain did a Rainbow Lorikeet, Muhammad chose the Crested Pigeon and Tarik and Brian selected the Galah.

Fixing the lines

Today we went outside and we saw a white tall line truck. We took a picture of the lifting thing and the men fixing the lines. We also saw the man on the truck watching them just in case there was a fire. They wore helmets and put circles around the lines. We saw the men coming down and the crane was pushing in and moving.

Learning Agreement Today!

Such fun with our learning during Learning Agreement today!

Miniya, Brian and Nyamal challenged themselves with puzzles. They displayed persistence when their challenge got really tough! What is the puzzle of I wonder?

At the communication space Tarik was using the iPad to create words. I wonder what the longest word is that they can create?

Ian, Liam and Nathan were challenging themselves by measuring between A and B. That’s a lot of unifix – I wonder how they will count them?!

Abass and Muhamad were listening to stories in the Campfire Space. I wonder which story was their favourite?

Elijah, Connor and Hussnain were creating machines in the Construction Space. I wonder which model is the fastest?

The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle

This week, Hot Potatoes enjoyed The Grouchy Ladybug By Eric Carle.

“First we read The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle. Miss Cervenjak read it and we listened to it online too”. Miniya

“We made our own book, just like Eric Carle”. Ali

“We used clocks to help us look at the time.” AJ

“We painted our pictures [illustrations].” Risinu

“If I was a little Ladybug is our new song. I like to sing it because I like ladybugs now.” Nathan

We went on our ladybug hunt. It was fun looking for aphids that the ladybugs eat. We didn’t find any ‘real’ ladybugs today but we did find some other ones!” Joyice & Nyachuot.

Outside Spaces

The grade 1’s have been working with the grade 4’s and Mr. Lyon to develop our outside space.
We brainstormed as a group then created drawings to represent what we would like to see, hear, smell and touch in our outside spaces.

What ideas could you share to create engaging outside spaces? Please comment!

A Child’s Plea…

The Grade 1’s were looking at the poem “A Child’s Plea…” (the author of the poem is unknown) during shared reading workshops. This poem has been in their reading logs since prep. We read the poem and discussed what learning is and what our learning looks like. They came up with so many “Wonderings” and “Discoveries” from reading the poem!

The biggest discovery was that they began to look at what they do during the day and began to identify what their learning.

“We share with each other! We are a community” – Brian
“It’s like the measuring that we are doing in the mathematics space” – Connor
“We played that memory game that is like a memory tray” – Jasmine
“Way and weigh are the same word but means different” – Tevi

Mother’s Day

Although it is Mother’s Day, we talked about how it is a great opportunity to appreciate any special females in our lives. We are hoping that all the special Mums, Grandmas, Aunts, sisters or special ladies in your lives had a wonderful day today!

Did you enjoy your “hand flowers”?

More than One Hundred

Today we were measuring and we used the unifix blocks to count between the two spots.

Some of us guessed it would take 100 blocks because it will take a lot of blocks to measure that.

We had a bit of trouble counting all the blocks once we laid them out but we did it in the end.

We found having markers every ten blocks helped but after 100 it really started to get tricky for some of us.

In fact after 109 it really got tricky!!

There were 3 more blocks to count and we worked the answer out in the end…could you?

Grade 1 Assembly

On Wednesday 3rd May 2012, the grade 1’s had their assembly to share their learning with Wooranna Park Primary School. They used Skype to portray real time news broadcasting. In workshops, students have been looking at different forms of sharing news – news reporters, newspapers and the blog. It is an opportunity to develop their public speaking and presenting skills.

It was a fantastic assembly, all grade 1 students should feel very proud of their learning from term 1 and 2!
