Our Projects

Today representatives of our committees shared with our whole Grade 1 community our different projects.

Committee 1

20121023-094549.jpg
“We’ve been talking about walking to school and planning a walk to school day” Tori.
“And being safe. We’ve been talking about signs that we see” Hussnain.
“We need air and energy and we have to exercise our bodies” Risinu.

Committee 2

20121023-095346.jpg
“We’ve been talking about what the 2013 preps need to know to walk to school safely” Alison.
“We wrote all our ideas on this piece of paper” Aaliyah.

Committee 3

20121023-100152.jpg
“We’re making an adventure story!” Brian.
“It means that we write a book that the reader chooses what they do” Nathan.
“We made a play about how to walk to school and played a game. It’s an adventure story about road safety” Tevi.
“We had traffic lights and the audience needed to give the choices. If we didn’t make a strong choice to go, we crashed” AJ.
“Red is for stop, green is for go and orange is for slow down” Milan.

We can’t wait to see the learning from all committees and how they can help the community be safe when coming to school!

Learning Agreement – Art Studio

Prep-1-2 Learning Agreement in our Art Studio:

Shigufa – “I painted a pattern.”
Tevi – “In LA we painted patterns. We used iPads to research patterns first.”
Aaliyah – “Today in LA I painted a circle but it had to be a pattern.”
Fiona T – “In LA I am proud of my work.”
Miniya – “We had to do a pattern but first we had to look on the iPads for patterns. We drew our patterns first then painted them.”

Sasha’s Visit

Today Kristen brought her dog Sasha to school so she could join us at the park. We all had lots of fun!

How would you describe Sasha? Can you think up imaginary stories of adventures that you could share with her? Could you draw a map of our journey from the grade 1 unit to the park?

Here are some pictures, writing (by Tevi) and drawings (by Broadie, Nathan and Aaliyah) from today!

Does the weight effect how far our models go?

Continued from our “Mrs Armitage on Wheels” workshops…..

Today we discussed the question “What would make a difference to how far our model travelled?”. We came up with lots of ideas – one being whether the weight would make a difference.

We weighed our models on scales. We used tiles to measure how heavy they were. Guess what? The model that went the furthest was also the heaviest!

Stop Work Day

Today was a bit of a different day, as the Grade 1’s, 2’s and Roohi from Prep, joined forces and had a fun day. Here’s what we’ve got to say…

END OF DAY REFLECTIONS

Logan: “My favourite thing was getting to use the i-Pads and the outside games.”

Luda (Alex’s Mum): “My favourite thing about today was coming to pick up Alex early when I finished work but he was having too much fun to come home!”

Daniel: “I played Chess on the i-Pad with Aaliyah. I taught her some new moves but I didn’t always win.”

Roohi: “I made new friends. Miniya and lots.”

Abass: “I fixed the blocks up. Circles, squares, triangles and another one. I don’t know what it called. I think it looks funny like a rectangle but it’s not. It has 4 corners and 4 sides. Do you know what shape it can be?”

Alex and Aaliyah: “It was fun drawing the Grade 2’s faces. I had to look really close to make it look the same.”

Tevi, Miniya and Connor made a lucky dip with all the kids that were here today, so we could take turns to use the i-Pads. They then decided to try put the names in alphabetical order.

Miniya: “It’s a bit hard. You have to know the alphabet really good.”

Tevi: “I know the alphabet, we had to look at the second letter too. Because Aa in Aaliyah is before Al in Alex.”

What this bike needs is….

After reading “Mrs Armitage on Wheels” the grade 1’s designed their own bikes, thinking of the repetitive statement from the story “what this bike needs is…”.

What creative thinking came from their designs!

A Child’s Plea…

The Grade 1’s were looking at the poem “A Child’s Plea…” (the author of the poem is unknown) during shared reading workshops. This poem has been in their reading logs since prep. We read the poem and discussed what learning is and what our learning looks like. They came up with so many “Wonderings” and “Discoveries” from reading the poem!

The biggest discovery was that they began to look at what they do during the day and began to identify what their learning.

“We share with each other! We are a community” – Brian
“It’s like the measuring that we are doing in the mathematics space” – Connor
“We played that memory game that is like a memory tray” – Jasmine
“Way and weigh are the same word but means different” – Tevi

Welcome Back Nyachuot!

Today we welcomed back Nyachuot to Grade 1. Nyachuot was a part of our learning community last year in Prep and we are excited to have her back to join in the amazing learning happening this year.

Nyachuot fit right back in, choosing the Communication Space for Learning Agreement. Together with Tevi, the girls searched for ‘th’ words to add to our word wall this week. What an engaging and fun start to learning at Wooranna Park!

Mother’s Day

Although it is Mother’s Day, we talked about how it is a great opportunity to appreciate any special females in our lives. We are hoping that all the special Mums, Grandmas, Aunts, sisters or special ladies in your lives had a wonderful day today!

Did you enjoy your “hand flowers”?
