The Olympic Space

With the Olympics coming up very soon, the Grade 1’s have been SO excited that we now have a whole space dedicated to the Olympics for Learning Agreement!

There is lots of mathematical thinking happening in this space… Problem solving, measuring, using counting on strategies, recording and more! As well as researching and reading.

Where is there maths in the Olympics ?

Rock Around the Clock!

After much excitement, the Grade 1’s are proud to announce their premiere release of “Rock Around the Clock”!

Students created the rock n roll style dance during the exploration of “time” in workshops. A group decided to be really dedicated to learning the dance, even during lunchtimes and Friday Fun! Their reward for their engagement and positive learning attitudes was to create this film clip.

Well done, you should all be very proud of your learning!

Does the weight effect how far our models go?

Continued from our “Mrs Armitage on Wheels” workshops…..

Today we discussed the question “What would make a difference to how far our model travelled?”. We came up with lots of ideas – one being whether the weight would make a difference.

We weighed our models on scales. We used tiles to measure how heavy they were. Guess what? The model that went the furthest was also the heaviest!

What this bike needs is….

After reading “Mrs Armitage on Wheels” the grade 1’s designed their own bikes, thinking of the repetitive statement from the story “what this bike needs is…”.

What creative thinking came from their designs!

A Child’s Plea…

The Grade 1’s were looking at the poem “A Child’s Plea…” (the author of the poem is unknown) during shared reading workshops. This poem has been in their reading logs since prep. We read the poem and discussed what learning is and what our learning looks like. They came up with so many “Wonderings” and “Discoveries” from reading the poem!

The biggest discovery was that they began to look at what they do during the day and began to identify what their learning.

Grade 1 & 2 LA!

Today Sarsha, Yanni and Aaliyah facilitated a workshop during our Grade 1 and 2 Learning Agreement day. They taught the grade 1’s and 2’s a rock’n’roll dance that they have been learning – “Rock around the clock”.

Aaliyah: “it made me feel excited!”
Sarsha: “it made me happy to show them. I found it difficult to teach them.”
Yanni: “it made me feel happy. I would like to make a film clip using the green screen room – with a background of a clock.”

They are very excited to create a movie – maybe they can create a grade 1 and 2 rock’n’roll dance group to make it with?

Mother’s Day

Although it is Mother’s Day, we talked about how it is a great opportunity to appreciate any special females in our lives. We are hoping that all the special Mums, Grandmas, Aunts, sisters or special ladies in your lives had a wonderful day today!

What does an engaged learner look like?

This is the Communication Space during our Grade 1 Learning Agreement. Look at how engaged they are in their learning!

What I see:
* they are staying in their space.
* they are looking at their learning.
* they are helping each other.

What I hear:
* they are asking each other questions.
* they are talking about what they are doing.
* they are using a volume that is not disrupting other spaces.
